The Adelaide city centre is the principal commercial, civic and cultural hub of South Australia. Planned in 1837 by Colonel William Light, it follows a grid of streets bounded by North, East, South and West Terraces, encircled by the Adelaide Park Lands. The core is approximately one square mile (about 2.6 km²).

The area sits on Kaurna Country. Dual place names are widely used, including Tarntanyangga (Victoria Square) and Karrawirra Parri (River Torrens).
